書本文：

A mother held her new baby and very slowly rocked him
back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And while she held him, she
sang:

I'll love you forever,

I'll like you for always,

As long as I'm living

my baby you'll be.

The baby grew. He grew and he grew and he grew. He grew
until he was two years old, and he ran all around the house. He pulled all the
books off the shelves. He pulled all the food out of the refrigerator and he
took his mother's watch and flushed it down the toilet. Sometimes his mother
would say, "this kid is driving me CRAZY!"

But at night time, when that two-year-old was quiet,
she opened the door to his room, crawled across the floor, looked up over the
side of his bed; and if he was really asleep she picked him up and rocked him
back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. While she rocked him she sang:

I'll love you forever,

I'll like you for always,

As long as I'm living

my baby you'll be.

The little boy grew. He grew and he grew and he grew.
He grew until he was nine years old. And he never wanted to come in for dinner,
he never wanted to take a bath, and when grandma visited he always said bad
words. Sometimes his mother wanted to sell him to the zoo!

But at night time, when he was asleep, the mother
quietly opened the door to his room, crawled across the floor and looked up
over the side of the bed. If he was really asleep, she picked up that nine-year-old
boy and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And while
she rocked him she sang:

I'll love you forever,

I'll like you for always,

As long as I'm living

my baby you'll be.

The boy grew. He grew and he grew and he grew. He grew
until he was a teenager. He had strange friends and he wore strange clothes and
he listened to strange music. Sometimes the mother felt like she was in a zoo!

But at night time, when that teenager was asleep, the
mother opened the door to his room, crawled across the floor and looked up over
the side of the bed. If he was really asleep she picked up that great big boy
and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. While she rocked
him she sang:

I'll love you forever,

I'll like you for always,

As long as I'm living

my baby you'll be.

That teenager grew. He grew and he grew and he grew. He
grew until he was a grown-up man. He left home and got a house across town. But
sometimes on dark nights the mother got into her car and drove across town.  If all the lights in her son's house were
out, she opened his bedroom window, crawled across the floor, and looked up
over the side of his bed. If that great big man was really asleep she picked
him up and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And while
she rocked him she sang:

I'll love you forever,

I'll like you for always,

As long as I'm living

my baby you'll be.

Well, that mother, she got older. She got older and
older and older. One day she called up her son and said, "You'd better
come see me because I'm very old and sick." So her son came to see her.
When he came in the door she tried to sing the song. She sang:

I'll love you forever,

I'll like you for always...

But she couldn't finish because she was too old and
sick. The son went to his mother. He picked her up and rocked her back and
forth, back and forth, back and forth. And he sang this song:

I'll love you forever,

I'll like you for always,

As long as I'm living

my Mommy you'll be.

When the son came home that night, he stood for a long
time at the top of the stairs. Then he went into the room where his very new
baby daughter was sleeping. He picked her up in his arms and very slowly rocked
her back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And while he rocked her he
sang:

I'll love you forever,

I'll like you for always,

As long as I'm living

my baby you'll be.

一個懷抱着新生嬰兒的媽媽，抱著孩子，她搖啊搖、搖啊搖、搖啊搖。她邊搖邊唱著：

小嬰兒長大了，一天天長得越高越大。他長到兩歲的時候，把家裡弄得天翻地覆。他把書架上的書扯了滿地，把冰箱的食物全扒出來，還把媽媽的手錶沖下馬桶。他
的媽媽有時候說："這孩子快把我逼瘋了！"

但每天晚上，當兩歲大的孩子安靜下來了，媽媽打開孩子的房門，小心翼翼爬過地板，來到床邊探頭看看；如果孩子真的睡著了，媽媽會把他抱起來，搖啊搖、搖啊
搖、搖啊搖。抱著孩子時，她唱著：

小男孩長大了，一天天長得越高越大。他已經九歲了。他不愛進門吃晚飯、不愛洗澡、還總是當著奶奶的面說不好聽的字眼。他的媽媽有時候說： "我真想把他賣給動物園！"

但每天晚上，當小男孩睡著了，媽媽悄悄打開他的房門，小心翼翼爬過地板，來到床邊探頭看看；如果他真的睡著了，她會抱起這九歲男孩，搖啊搖、搖啊搖、
搖啊搖。抱著他時，她唱著：

我永遠愛你

永遠喜歡你

今生與今世

你是我寶貝

男孩長大了。一天天長得越高越大，一轉眼已經是個少年了。他交奇怪的朋友、穿奇怪的衣服、聽奇怪的音樂。有時候，他媽媽覺得自己像是住在動物園一
樣！ 

但每天晚上，當這個少年睡著了，媽媽悄悄打開他的房門，悄悄爬過地板，來到床邊探頭看看；如果他真的睡著了，她會抱起這大男孩，搖啊搖、搖啊搖、搖啊
搖。抱著他時，她唱著：

我永遠愛你

永遠喜歡你

今生與今世

你是我寶貝

少年長大了。一天天長得越高越大，現在他是個大人了。他離開家，在城市的另一個角落有了自己的房子。但有時候，在很黑很黑的夜晚，他的媽媽會開車來到 城市的這一邊。如果她兒子家的燈都滅了，媽媽會打開兒子的臥室窗戶，悄悄爬過地板，來到床邊探頭看看。如果這個已經成了大人的孩子真的睡著了，她會抱起 這長大成人的孩子，搖啊搖、搖啊搖、搖啊搖。抱著他時，她唱著：

我永遠愛你

永遠喜歡你

今生與今世

你是我寶貝

這個媽媽呢，慢慢的老了。一天天越來越老、越來越老。有一天，她打電話給她的兒子，說："你最好快來看看我，因為我已經又老又病了" 。她的兒子於是來看她。當他進門時，這個媽媽試著要唱那首歌：

我永遠愛....你

永遠.....喜歡.....你

但她唱不下去了，因為她太老了也病得太嚴重了。這個兒子來到媽媽的身邊。他抱起媽媽，搖啊搖、搖啊搖、搖啊搖，他唱著：

我永遠愛妳

永遠喜歡妳

今生與今世

妳是我媽咪

那天晚上，當這個兒子回到家裡，他站在樓梯口好久好久。然後他走進剛出生的女兒房間，小寶寶正在睡覺。他把女兒抱在胸口
，慢慢地一邊搖啊搖、搖啊搖、搖啊搖，一邊唱著：
